The foundation of your teaching and learning model

Habits are the areas of pedagogy on which you wish to provide feedback and therefore the foundation of your teaching and learning model.

Top tips 💡

Using your help text flexibly
It is advisable to keep the same Habits while you have a particular teaching framework in place. Making minor changes to the wording of a Habit will not present a problem, however, major changes to the wording of a Habit that shift its focus onto a different area of pedagogy will make the data you gather against it lose its validity.

Amending and adding to the content in your help text is easy and will not affect your quality of teaching data in any way, so you can take a flexible approach. This is exactly what one of our trusts has done, opting to gather data against set Habits so they can see quality of teaching headlines across the trust, but give their primary, secondary and special schools autonomy to write their own context-specific help text. Here is an example, comparing help text from one of their secondary schools and one of their special schools:

Lesson notes Habit for recording objectives
One of our schools has added a ‘Lesson notes’ Habit to their feedback forms. This section is used to record the lesson objective and any other context around a lesson. Even though the other strands on the form are set up with ‘Ratings and comments’, this strand is ‘Comment only’, so they are using the platform's flexibility to switch between the two settings on different Habits within the same feedback form.
